First see patterns, then erase them
In your business industry or sector, the ways in which customer needs are met and the products that dominate your space may have settled into a homogeneous pattern dating back centuries.
It’s tempting but unwise to want your business to emulate and differentiate. Rather, introduce a break-point in the pattern you see; a disruption that moves the needle towards better-satisfying customer needs.
When you disrupt, forget odds
Knowing odds of success with a new idea are important when we seek confirmation before we venture.
Disruptive ideas have no logic, nor benchmark or historical reference point.
They are the benchmark; they are fueled by the uncertainty of sailing unchartered waters.
First take may not be enough
Be prepared to keep correcting along the course and avoid thinking “Am I living in a cloud?” Disruptive thinking must of necessity disrupt even your own conventional wisdom.
You must find comfort in entering and exiting your disruptive mental zone. This helps you to correct course, see more patterns and gather more mental adrenalin to further disrupt.
Great ideas emerge out of discontinuities in established patterns; practice disruptive thinking for greater success.
