B&T Steel: Trevor Van Vuuren

B&T Steel: Trevor Van Vuuren

In the past year and the tough economic times we’ve gone through, I’ve drawn a lot on the advice my father gave me to believe in myself. Not only does it keep me motivated and positive, it also gives me faith in the direction I have chosen to take the business.

We took a decision to expand B&T Steel and broaden our horizons into new and bigger markets. In the current climate, it’s the kind of decision that can draw scepticism. But my father always taught me you can do anything you set your mind to, so long as you believe in it and in yourself. It’s vitally important that people see how strongly I, as CEO, believe in the vision for the company. During tough times people look to the example of leadership when forming their opinions and when they see that I believe we can achieve our goals, they believe it too. During the year we have achieved a great deal and have taken the first important steps to the next level. We’ve landed some significantly larger contracts and we’ve grown the B&T Steel brand through an extensive rebranding exercise. None of this would have been possible if we didn’t believe it could be done.

There will always be challenges and hurdles, and you need to accept these. Optimism should always be balanced with realism. But then you need to concentrate your energy in the right direction and get on with achieving your goals.
