I have a small business and am new to social media. What are some do’s and don’ts I should know about?

Social networks are great communication tools if you know how to use them. Many people, unfortunately don’t: they either inflict every thought that passes through their head on everyone else, make inflammatory comments, or are irrelevant and/or boring. For business, the same rules apply, and more. Here are some do’s and don’ts:

DON’T:

  • Rage about something political because something has ticked you off.
  • Rant about a customer, partner or competitor.
  • Mingle personal messages with business or marketing messages.
  • Focus only on selling products or services. Social networking is about conversing with your market.
  • Automate cross-posting of the same content on multiple channels. Many social networkers are on multiple platforms.
  • Ignore comments, likes or messages by followers
  • Ignore your page – update, update, update

DO:

  • Engage followers with relevant information, photos, links and videos
  • Tailor your content to the relevant platform. Facebook doesn’t force comments into 140 characters
  • Take the time to think before posting content.
  • Try offer new content frequently.
