How A Pop-up Origami Installation Got People Talking About Their Savings’ Dreams


European savings’ brand recently partnered with Retroviral and renowned South African origami artist Ross Symons in London to start a conversation with bystanders at a pop up origami installation about their personal views on finance with a simple question: ‘What are you saving for?

Answers varied from holidays to horses to Italian cars. Symons then briefly stepped away and created a tiny piece of magic by folding a bank note into a physical manifestation of each answer which he then gave to his audience. The bank note was used as the catalyst for what can be achieved by saving for your dreams.

The most rewarding part of this project was the collaboration between Symons and Origami for Africa, a non-profit organisation that teaches origami to children from the partially informal township of Khayelitsha, near Cape Town. In exchange for making the origami cranes, the children were taught about earning pocket money and the value of savings – a perfect synergy between this art project and the brand.


1,000 origami cranes (birds) were folded by Origami for Africa which were then flown to London’s South Bank where they were used as the key feature of the pop-up installation. The beautiful, eye-catching display attracted a strong audience throughout the day, and achieved its objective of getting people to talk about saving more, while highlighting the services can offer them.

The campaign extends across social media where European consumers are encouraged to share their savings dreams with the hashtag #RaisinDreams.
