Online Sales Spike on Cyber Monday

With Black Friday a distant memory, Small Business Saturday done and dusted, Cyber Monday has arrived.

Cyber Monday was coined in 2005 by shopping trade group, who noticed an increase in online sales on the Monday after Thanksgiving, when people returned to work.

Shopper clicks to skyrocket

Cyber Monday 2012 is expected to be the biggest online shopping day of the year in the US.

Research firm comScore predicts Americans will spend $1.5bn, up from $1.25bn on Cyber Monday 2011, as retailers punt special offers to get shoppers to click on their websites.

How well retailers do on Cyber Monday will provide insight into Americans’ evolving shopping habits.

Trend affects the entire weekend

With increased access to high speed internet and increasing use of smartphones and tablet computers, people are relying less on their work computers to shop than they did when the term Cyber Monday was first coined.

As a result, the days between the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday and Cyber Monday have become equally busy for online shopping.
