Business Overview

Every home features somesort of art as decoration. The market for art is enormous and continuesto grow as our population expands. Starting an art auction andliquidation sales service is a great way to become your own boss.

Thereare thousands of artists who have works that they cannot, or do nothave the ability to sell. Why not sell it for them?

You can advertisethe art auctions and liquidation sales in local newspapers or onlineand start making money right away. Start by visiting art schools andassociations so you can begin to market your services to artists whowant to sell their works. Once you have a few hundred works of artcommitted, you can hold the first art auction or sale.

You will need torent a temporary location for your ‘one-day art sale,’ and goodlocations include hotel ballrooms or banquet facilities. Room rentalmay not even cost any money providing you can convince the hotelmanager potential food and drink concession sales will be sufficientfor rent payment. The rest is straightforward; hold the first artauction or sale. You do not need to be an auctioneer to start andoperate this type of business, just wear formal clothes for aprofessional appearance.

Once you have perfected the business locally, you can duplicate the process and hold art auctions and sales acrossthe country.

Requirements

Computer skills and equipment will beadvantageous when you start to catalog the art for listing purposes.

Start-up costs

The only cost associated with starting an art auctionservice is time and an initial advertising budget. Once you haveestablished the approximate value of the items to be sold, you will beable to set an advertising budget. I would suggest about 5 to 10percent of the estimated total sale value of the items to be sold atthe art auction or sale. Total start-up costs are $5,000 to $10,000.

Profit potential

You should be able to use a very basic formula forestablishing a billing rate. Charge a 50 percent commission on allsales (no reserve pricing in effect), and allow half of the commissionsto cover the total overheads associated with the sale.

Providing eachsale averages $10,000 in gross revenues, and one show per month isconducted, the business would net $30,000 per year.

Business Overview

Parents are an indulgent lot, and at no other time are they more indulgent than when their children are newborns. I recently visited a de

signer who works from her home and exclusively designs nurseries for expecting parents. During this meeting, I gained great insight into this business and how to market your services. First lesson is to throw away everything you know about marketing and promote your service solely on “goo goo ga ga” (as the designer puts it). What she means is that most of the decisions expecting parents make in terms of a baby nursery are made on an emotional basis.

Her secret to business success is to promote her design talents using elaborate displays at any trade show that is remotely associated with babies and children.

This method of marketing enabled her to build a solid client and referral base, with very little (if any) competition at these trade shows. Of course, there are additional marketing options that are open, including working with architects, interior designers, retail children’s stores and custom homebuilders.

The profits that can be earned as a nursery designer are excellent. The above-mentioned nursery designer is netting in excess of $80,000 per year after expenses.
