Cloth Diaper Service
Startup Costs: $2,000 – $10,000
Home Based: Can be operated from home.
Online Operation? Yes

Business Overview

Lots of parents would like an alternative to the environmentally questionable disposable diaper, but don’t have the time or inclination to deal with cloth diapers. You can be the solution to their problem. A baby can go through as many as 4,000 diapers before being fully toilet-trained, and this fact of life creates an outstanding business opportunity.

Depending on your startup budget, there are two methods of pursuing this venture. In the first, you offer complete service–you supply, deliver, pick up and clean the cloth diapers. The second startup method is to simply deliver and pick up the diapers, and have an established commercial laundry clean them. If startup capital is not a problem, the first option will definitely leave more profits for you.

To market a cloth diaper service, try to obtain a list of new baby births from local hospitals. You should also try to partner with other businesses targeting new parents–doulas, midwives, Lamaze classes or infant product stores. Once you’ve compiled a list of potential clients, simply drop off or mail a marketing presentation to parents outlining the benefits of your service, why cloth diapers are preferable to disposable, and how they can contact you. Include one free diaper so they can try it out. Once you get going, word-of-mouth will help you out tremendously.

The Market

Your customers are new parents who are concerned about the environment.

Needed Equipment

For delivery, you’ll need a large vehicle or van. You’ll need a large supply of diapers and you may want to offer delivery of other necessary items (diaper pins, etc.). If you’ll be cleaning the diapers yourself, you’ll need a large, commercial-grade washer and dryer.

Day Care Center
Startup Costs: $10,000 – $50,000
Home Based: Can be operated from home.
Part Time: Can be operated part-time.
Online Operation? No

Business Overview

The escalating cost of living has made child day care a booming industry simply because many families require two full-time incomes to make ends meet. Day-care facilities can be homebased, operated from a storefront or office location, or in conjunction with an established business or office complex. Investment budget, business objectives and demand will likely dictate what is the best operating location for you.

In the United States and Canada, day-care facilities as well as child-care staff must obtain proper licensing and certification to meet minimum operating requirements. Because every state and province has its own individual licensing requirements, you will need to contact your regional municipal offices to make inquires, or contact the associations listed on the next page to inquire about certification and licensing requirements in your area. Once your center is open, you will find that the problem is not finding kids to fill your facility, but having to turn down parents daily because you are at your limit. Word-of-mouth advertising is generally all that is required for marketing in this industry.

Doll Making
Startup Costs: Under $2,000
Home Based: Can be operated from home.
Part Time: Can be operated part-time.
Online Operation? Yes

Business Overview

It may not seem like it, but doll making and repairs is a giant segment of the craft and toy industry. To reinforce this, simply visit an antique shop that specializes in antique dolls or a retailer of new custom “one of a kind” dolls, and you’ll soon see that the prices are out of this world. A doll-making business can be started from home on a part-time basis. You can sell the dolls you make through retail accounts, kiosks, mail order, craft shows and the internet.

This is an enterprise that requires very little in the way of startup investment, and the ongoing monthly overhead is also very small. Once you’ve sharpened your skills in doll making, you can proceed to antique doll repairs. Some of the antique dolls can sell for as much as $500 for the “real” thing and $300 for replicas. To get started, find out if doll-making classes are available in your local community.

If they’re not readily available and you master these skills, you could also begin holding your own how-to classes to earn additional income. Don’t forget that in the doll world, all of these creations need accessories, houses, cars, clothes and other doll friends, so your only limit is your imagination.
