Doggie Day Care

Startup Costs: $2,000 – $10,000
Online Operation? No

Business Overview

Day-care facilities for dogs are becoming increasingly popular, especially as more and more caring dog owners are realizing the benefits of leaving their beloved dogs at day care with other dogs instead of at home alone while they are at work. Dogs, like people, are social creatures and need contact with people and other dogs to become well-behaved and confident.

However, a doggie day care should not be confused with a kennel, which boards animals for short- and long-term time spans. A doggie day care is strictly a drop off in the morning and pick up in the evening, or anytime during the day, type of operation. If space allows and your neighbors don’t mind the barking, you can open at home.

A better alternative is to rent commercial warehouse space and convert it into a doggie day spa, complete with water features, fenced outdoor space and indoor couches to ensure your clients have all the creature comforts they are used to at home. Some doggie day-care centers install web cams throughout their facility so people at work can watch the live footage online. Current rates are in the range of $20 to $35 per day, with discounts for weekly service.

Business Overview

Designing, manufacturing, and wholesaling pet toys could put you on the path to financial freedom, and best of all this is a business opportunity that can be started part-time from home on a minimal initial investment. There are literally thousands of different pet toys on the market and this is definitely a situation where it is not important that you build it first, only better.

The toys can be sold on a wholesale basis to pet retailers, or even directly to consumers via the Internet and mail order. I purchased two glow-in-the-dark balls for my dog from a man who was selling them right out of a knapsack in the park. The key to success in this type of business is to have a high-quality toy and the ability to get the pet toy in front of as many potential customers as possible.

Remember, pets are like children to most people and generally people will spare no expense when it comes to the happiness of their pets. That is why starting any new business that involves pets, or that is related to pets in any way, has already got a head start on the road to financial success.

Business Overview

There is something special about a petting zoo that lures both children and their parents. Starting and running a petting zoo is certainly not for everyone, as a petting zoo requires a great deal of knowledge and special handling skills in terms of the animals.

Additionally, this type of business can be somewhat costly to start and operate. However, a properly established and managed petting zoo business, whether operated from a fixed or portable location, can be both a personally and financially rewarding business to own and operate. Traditionally, popular animals featured in a petting zoo have always been sheep, deer, ponies and rabbits.

Scratch Posts

Home Based: Can be operated from home.
Part Time: Can be operated part-time.

Business Overview

Scratch posts’cats love them, and cat owners love them even more. Starting a manufacturing business that focuses on building cat scratch posts is probably the easiest manufacturing business featured in this chapter to start.

This enterprise requires virtually no special skills and only basic hand or power tools. Logically, the best venue for selling this type of product will be local pet stores and cat shows. Purchasing a few scratch posts can give you a good idea in terms of how this product is constructed and the various types of materials required.

Once again, if possible try to incorporate recycled materials into the construction of the cat scratch posts, as it will serve as a good marketing tool and, of course, help the environment. This business venture is ideal for the person who is seeking a few extra dollars each month, earned by running their own homebased business.
