One of South Africa’s longest established private equity firms, with an investment track record in the country dating back to 1992, Horizon Equity Partners is widely recognised as a leading provider of development and buyout capital to small and medium sized enterprises. Key executives have collectively initiated and managed over 50 private equity investments and the firm has invested in over 30 companies, many of which have been profitably exited, including a number of successful JSE listings.
We invest amounts from R10m to R100m into privately held South African companies at most stages of the development cycle, from early stage through to pre-listing, including management buy-outs. We are also able to organise and lead syndications with other venture capital firms for larger investments.
Our approach is business-centric, not transaction-centric. We believe that company value is built primarily through business growth and we will only invest in those businesses where we are confident of being able to add real value and to help achieve this.
We seek long-term partnerships with the companies in which we invest, sharing the same risks and rewards as other shareholders for time frames of several years or more.
In general, Horizon Equity Partners invests as a minority shareholder and will take majority positions only in special cases. We view each investment as a partnership with management, and will require executive management to own a significant shareholding.
Personal chemistry is another important part of our philosophy. In general, the same personnel that initiate an investment by Horizon Equity Partners will be responsible for that investment throughout its life. This encourages strong, stable relationships, built on trust and mutual respect, to be developed with a company’s management team.

In evaluating the entrepreneur, aspects such the ability to run a successful business on sound business principles, integrity, drive, vision and appropriate experience, are considered.
Business Partners considers financing applications up to R20 million in all sectors of the economy — with the exception of on-lending activities, direct farming operations, underground mining and non-profit organisations — to those formal small and medium businesses whose gross assets are under R100 million, where annual turnover does not exceed R200 million and/or employees are less than 500 in number.
